What Are Immediate Dentures?
Before your extraction appointment, we take impressions and measurements while your natural teeth are still in place. Using that information, your immediate denture is fabricated before surgery. Once your teeth are removed, we place the denture during the same visit, so you can leave the office with teeth rather than spend weeks or months without a smile.
An immediate denture serves as your first denture while your mouth heals and adjusts. It allows you to smile, speak, begin eating soft foods, and return to many of your normal activities sooner. It also supports your lips and cheeks while covering the extraction sites, helping protect the healing tissues during the earliest stage of recovery.
After your teeth are removed, your gums and jawbone naturally change shape as they heal. Because your immediate denture was made before those changes occurred, its fit gradually changes as your mouth does. Relines and adjustments are a normal part of this process and usually indicate that healing is progressing as expected.
Once your gums and jawbone have reached a more stable shape, we may recommend relining your denture or replacing it with a conventional denture or an implant-supported restoration designed for your fully healed mouth.
Immediate Dentures vs Conventional Dentures
Tooth removal typically occurs in a single appointment, but healing continues for months. The difference between immediate and conventional dentures comes down to what you want that healing period to look like.
Immediate dentures are designed for patients who do not want to go without teeth after extractions. Since you leave the office with teeth already in place, you can continue participating in daily life while your mouth heals. However, the denture is made before your teeth are removed. We tell patients to keep in mind that adjustments are expected as swelling goes down and the gums and jawbone change shape.
Conventional dentures are made after healing has taken place. Since they are based on the shape of your healed mouth, the fit is often more predictable from the beginning. The tradeoff is time. Patients who choose this option usually spend the healing period without replacement teeth.
For many people, immediate and conventional dentures are not competing options. They can be two stages of the same plan. An immediate denture helps you through the months after extractions. Afterward, a conventional denture or implant-supported restoration may provide a more precise long-term fit once your mouth has stabilized.
Upgrading With Mini Dental Implants
A conventional denture creates a more predictable fit than an immediate denture. However, even a well-made conventional denture still rests on the gums and the bone beneath them. Because the jawbone can continue to change after tooth loss, the denture’s foundation can change over time, too.
Mini dental implants give the denture something stronger to hold onto. Mini implants are small titanium posts we place in the jawbone. Once in place, the surrounding bone gradually fuses with them. Once that connection forms, the implants begin to function more like natural tooth roots. They help anchor the denture in place and transfer chewing forces into the bone.
Many patients notice a significant difference. An implant denture attaches to a stable foundation in the jaw rather than relying on suction or adhesives alone. This added support can reduce movement, ease pressure on the gums, and help the denture maintain a more reliable fit over time.
